Geopolitical situation of Lithuania determined a lot of intense military activities all around the country – First and Second World Wars (I II WW). Country was occupied – lot of Soviet Union units from 1940 till 1993 were stationed in Lithuania taking over 68 000 ha (or 1, 2 %) territory of country. They were stationed in the biggest cities and capital Vilnius. I II WW and occupation are the main circumstances causing Lithuania territory being heavily contaminated with hazardous objects – unexploded ordnance (UXO). 10 citizens died and around 20 were injured from inflicted threat of explosives during the period of independent Lithuania.
